The tracker is a BitTorrent client that connects to other connected peers via the BitTorrent DHT. It can act as a directory and can keep track of the peers and the pieces that peers have downloaded and can even list the files in this directory. The tracker is also used to announce new peers, connect with upload peers and keep peers informed of new files and pieces (new torrents). As the tracker persists over time, it provides an historical window into the torrent file which is the heart of BitTorrent’s file-sharing network. The tracker also keeps track of the pieces in each piece in order to reassemble them on the file that was larger than a single single piece. The process of building this file is called peeling.
The informational inter-relationships between files are based on the pre-shared connections, as depend upon the number of seeds and peers. This inter-relationship is called the BitTorrent network or network of peer relationships. Some larger torrent clients such as uTorrent and Vuze support advanced features such as complete bittorrent sync. Some clients have even added support for popular film and music formats.
Some newer clients, instead of directly looking up a file's hash, have an \"external storage system\" or \"external storage database\" that lists files (or, more commonly, file table entries) by its original hash. This is a much faster process than looking up a hash for every possible file. This process also allows the client to automatically cache downloads into this database. The cache can be invalidated whenever the database changes (for instance, if there is new information added to the tracker), and the client can 'check' for updates to the database. 7211a4ac4a
